Arashiyama Monkey ParkUnofficial guide

How hard is the climb at Arashiyama Monkey Park?

It's a real climb, not a stroll. Plan on 20–30 minutes uphill to the summit, starting with 120 steps.

How long does it take to reach the top?

We suggest allowing 20–30 minutes. The official site says about 20 minutes.

Go at your own pace. The path is well maintained the whole way.

What is the path like?

  1. Entrance. Buy your ticket in cash. There are toilets here.
  2. 120 steps. The climb starts with a flight of stairs.
  3. Uphill path. After the stairs, a maintained path climbs more gently.
  4. Summit, 160 m. A rest hut with toilets and views over Kyoto. You can feed the monkeys from inside the hut.

There are no toilets between the entrance and the summit.

How should you prepare?

  • Wear shoes you can climb stairs in.
  • Bring water, especially on a hot day.
  • Going down is easier on your lungs but harder on your knees. Take the steps slowly.

Can you bring a stroller or a wheelchair?

Strollers aren't recommended because of the stairs. With a baby, a carrier is the easier option.

Carrying a suitcase?

No lockers at the park. Suitcases, carry-on cases and strollers aren't recommended on the climb.
